Bring the Zoo Train back to the Rose Garden!

For 50 years, the ride through Washington Park was a Portland treasure. It closed in 2013.

We’re on a mission to bring it back.

Our elected officials have approved the first step!

🚂 The Zoo Train Is Moving Forward — and We Need You!

For the first time ever, Metro and the City of Portland are aligned.

The restoration is happening.

Here's how you can help.

Restoration aligns with the goals of both Metro and the City of Portland — enhancing visitor experience, mobility, and activation of Washington Park.
— Mayor Keith Wilson, City of Portland

On February 3, 2026, the Metro Council gave the green light to move forward on restoring the Washington Park and Zoo Railway — a historic milestone years in the making and one you helped make possible.

Volunteers are already out on the tracks. Technical and feasibility work is now underway. The momentum is real — and we need hands, hearts, and support to keep it going! 💪

Here’s what our community is saying

Why the Zoo Railway?

Fun

Social capital matters. The ride is fun for people of all ages and abilities, and draws both locals and tourists alike.

It’s a Win-Win

A win for the train is a win for the zoo. The railroad was the “golden goose” of the zoo and has continued to generate more funds annually than it costs.

Transportation

The railway is a much-needed mass transportation option connecting the zoo and popular Washington Park destinations, all plagued with inadequate parking.

Education

The full 20-minute journey into Washington Park provides an opportunity to educate riders about forest ecology, steam engines and train rides.

History

The railway is listed as an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. This community infrastructure must be preserved for the benefit of future generations.
